Food Scene

Live Hawaiian music each night starting about 7p.m.; good, mainly healthy food - although you can get fried chicken waffles too; portions are generous. Unless you are really hungry, you can probably split an order. Lots of beers and kombucha on tap. Refills on coffee; fruit infused cold water. Vegetarian options. Open air seating. Sports-screen T.V. at bar. Look at the beautiful koa canoe suspended from the ceiling - rescued from Molokai. The owners are generous; the staff happy to be there. To show unity, Nalu's send a mile-long lei to Paris and then another to Orlando after the tragedies there. Nalu's is behind the Kihei Post Office on Kihei Road. Open: 8a.m. to 9p.m. Happy Hours: 3-6p.m. Good food and nice people.

A trip to the Haleakalā National Park is beautiful - and unique. If you go for sunrise, be sure to take something warm to wear; it's at 11,000 feet and often cold in the dark. Wear sunscreen, take water. Remember, walking down into the crater is a lot easier than coming back up. Also now, for a Haleakala Sunrise, you will need a reservation, and getting reservations at the crater takes planning: "The one-day, non-transferable $1.50 sunrise reservation is only available online at www.recreation.gov at least 60 days in advance of a planned visit. . . After the initial release of tickets two months in advance sells out, the website will show tickets as "not yet released" until 7:00 AM two days in advance. . . Currently, these sell out in less than 10 minutes online. Please note that calling the park directly, or visiting in-person, will not result in a reservation since staff at Haleakalā National Park are unable to make reservations for you. For questions, call the recreation.gov help line at 1-877-444-6777. No reservations for sunset are required at this time." **** I've never gotten a reservation for sunrise, and I don't have any special connections. So the best alternative is to go for sunset when you don't need a reservation. I like going then anyway. It's not so cold; you don't have to get up in the middle of the night to go up in the dark, and it isn't so crowded at sunset. The afternoon light is beautiful. You can get there early enough to hike around, stay for sunset, and then stop for dinner on the way back down the crater. I think you will love the experience and there isn't the hassle if you go for sunset. You might check the weather report before you go up to see if it is raining or not. Sometimes Groupon offers special discounts for tours, so you might check that possibility too. Haleakala is a must see. Aloha, John

This free museum is the only U.S. marine sanctuary dedicated to education about our visiting humpback whales and rescuing entangled whales - especially the curious calves. On Tuesday and Thursday from 11- near, hear "The 45-Ton Humpback Whale" talk. It's free - and just across the street from Kihei Bay Surf.

You may not know about Hawaiian outrigger canoe paddling. Kihei Canoe Club takes up much of my mom’s time, and I’ve paddled for KCC too. The canoe site is about a mile north of Kihei Bay Surf. I love being on the water; the people are healthy and involved; there is a spot for every level. Go to the Kihei Canoe Club website for a look. If you would like to give it a try, I suggest going to the visitor paddle on a Tuesday or Thursday. Be at the Kihei Canoe Club site by about 7:15 am to be sure to get a seat. You do not need to be experienced (but know how to swim just in case). The club asks for a donation – $40, but it goes to good use, and you will get to be on the water and are likely to have a wonderful experience. The whales are in our waters from about December to April. At other times, you are likely to see turtles and other marine life. Usually, you will be able to take a short swim, and you can take a snorkel and mask with you too (look for the ones in the big closet). Just drop over the side of the canoe when you stop to rest, but ask the steers-person first. If you are lucky, Kimokeo, the KCC Hawaiian cultural leader will be there too. If the waves are high or there is a shore break, the boats won’t go out. They want everyone to be safe – and have a good time.

Close to Kihei Bay Surf, the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge – is at the Kihei end, just off Mokulele Highway (now called Veterans Highway, but not by locals). There is an informative visitor center, and you can walk around the sanctuary and go on the boardwalk to look for birds.

ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu is south of my favorite beach, " Big Beach" or in Hawaiian - "Oneloa." Established in 1973, ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve includes a coastal lava field and surrounding waters on the southwest coast of the island of Maui, Hawaii. It consists of 1,238 acres on land and 807 acres ocean along 3 miles of Maui's southwestern coastline. Often there is a volunteer docent there to answer questions. It is a wonderful area to snorkel. Much of the area is protected, but there is room for you.

Do you like to golf? You can go to Ka'anapali Golf Course and pay $80-170 for your tee time - or go where the locals go: Waiehu Golf Course - "18-holes overlook a stunning tourmaline blue sea, the famous Waihe’e Reef in sight, just offshore. The clubhouse “complex” comes complete with: Restaurant Pro Shop Starter's Booth Sharing the beachfront with Waiehu Beach Park, beautiful white sand beckons from below the sixth, seventh, and eighth holes on the ocean side. The course is located between the towns of Waihe’e and Waiehu, and is easily accessible from Kahekili Highway (Hwy 340)." Cost? The highest is for non-resident weekend rates - $75., but they offer discounts for military, seniors, students. You'll be right on the ocean. Go play golf.

The Kai Kanani, a gorgeous 65-foot catamaran, offers whale watches, delux snorkeling, and sunset tours. Because they leave from a Makena beach where there is no harbor, many fewer people tend to be on these tours. You do need to be willing to get a bit wet to get on and off the boat, but you can get help if you need it. The captain, crew, and naturalists are friendly and very knowledgeable. You are sure to have a wonderful time on any of the Kai Kanani tours. Enjoy.

Hawaiian Experience

For a slice of local culture: Thursday nights from 7- 8:30 pm, go to the little green church, Keolahou Congregational at 177 S. Kihei Road near the Kihei Canoe Club. It’s ukulele and Hawaiian singing and hula night. I’m still happy trying to sing. Provided sheet music allows you to sing Hawaiian chants and songs. The amp for the good players and singers is loud enough to cover what we novices are doing. Often locals will get up and dance hulas. A small donation and/or food pantry donations are requested. If you want to rent a ukulele (or during high season if you want a seat), go early. It’s a really fun evening. On Sundays at 1 pm, you can get hula lessons there too. These are really joyful events.

COSTCO - Kahului -for gas and more

Get your gas at COSTCO – near the airport. Gas there is $.50 -$1.00 a gallon cheaper than any other gas station. You will need a COSTCO card. It also has some restaurant and activity discount cards you can buy. Look in an aisle near the checkout counters. And, of course, it has many other things to buy. <https://www.costco.com/warehouse-locations/kahului-HI-119.html?utm_term=KW&utm_campaign=Homepage&utm_medium=GMB&utm_source=Google&utm_content=Link> If you don’t have a COSTCO card, go to the Safeway gas station near the airport where gas is about 10 cents a gallon more expensive than COSTCO, but cheaper than the other stations.
