What to see in Spello
Splendidissima Colonia Iulia at the time of Augustus, Spello will conquer you from the very first steps, with its extraordinary walls and the historic entrance gates to the city. From the Porta Consolare, with a mediaeval tower, to the Porta Venere, with the monumental Romanesque Towers of Properzio. You walk uphill between cobbled paths embraced by elegant mediaeval and Renaissance palaces, and between courtyards and sunny squares where you can catch your breath. We advise you not to miss the Chapel of Sant'Anna; Santa Maria Maggiore with the Baglioni Chapel, which houses works by Pinturicchio and a Renaissance floor in Deruta-made majolica; the Collegiate Church of San Lorenzo, but also the beautiful Church of Sant'Andrea with frescoed vaults and walls and with the extraordinary work Madonna Enthroned with Saints by Pinturicchio. Towards sunset, walk towards the Belvedere via Via dei Cappuccini. Also not to be missed are Via Torre Belvedere with the Church of S. Biagio, Via San Martino I, Via Borgo del Teatro, Via Giulia with the remains of the Roman Arch.
