Drinks & Nightlife

Matterhorn is as quintessentially Wellington as the Beehive! Originally a Swiss coffee house opened in 1963, it has metamorphosed into a regular’s restaurant, café, cocktail bar and supper club. To get a sense for the significance of this place, it was the bar of choice to Louis Armstrong when he performed in Wellington. Enough said!

If you ask the owner at the Thistle Inn he'll tell you that this was the publican house of choice for Te Rauparaha -- the hugely significant iwi chief in the 1800s. That should give you a sense for the heritage of this building, and its long-standing place in the history of Wellington. Great for a pint.

What's not to like? From our place to Oriental Parade and beyond, the Wellington waterfront is the lifeblood of our city. It's where runners cross paths with theatre performers, where wind belts commuting public servants, and where everybody gushes 'you can't beat Wellington on a good day.'
