Perched high on a cliff, it's easy to see why the haunting remains of Whitby Abbey were inspiration for Bram Stoker's gothic tale of 'Dracula'. Tea Rooms next door but equally as nice to enjoy a picnic in the grounds.

If you climb out of the back of Castleton you quite quickly come to the an area of moorland called Castleton Rigg, with a few pathways carved through the heather that lead you to 'The Seated Man' statue by Sean Henry. He sits 10 feet tall and looks out over Westerdale. He's impressive, definitely worth a little trek up there if you're not too bad on your feet (10-15 mins up the hill on uneven ground!)

Once you reach the top of the famous "199 Steps" you will be greeted by St. Mary's Church and the ruins of Whitby Abbey, which reportedly inspired Bram Stoker to write Dracula. The views are spectacular up there. Definitely worth the effort. It's a great place to rest up inside the church. Very peaceful and interesting. I like to see the columns which were made out of old ships' masts. Recycling at its finest.

People may have heard or know something about James Cook but this is a man who undertook mind boggling depths of exploration with fantastic amounts of success. He was a great cartographer and skilled artist. He was the first to map out the 1000 miles east coast of Australia and New Zealand - accordingly most of what can be found on the costs of those two countries was named by Cook.A man who had a tragic end but who achieved so very much in life. If you look at the base of the statue and see the additional plates added to the statues by representatives of the above countries and others to continue to mark the achievements of this local lad. Great sunsets and views from here too.

An interesting small museum, which despite its size contains so many different exhibits. What makes it so special is the volunteers who are so friendly and full of enthusiasm. It covers virtually every aspect of life in the area and takes you back in time. Well worth visiting if you are in the area and very close to the NYMR station in Pickering.

Probably an hour and a quarter drive from here to Helmsley but we really love this place. Set in the gronds of Duncombe Park, this is home to a large collection of exotic and spectacular birds of prey. They have a few flight displays on days when the weather allows. I'd ring to check the timings if you fancied a day here. We have been many, MANY times!

Cute little railway that runs in the summer. I must admit that although it is mainly for kids we love 'accompanying' them whenever they ask to go. It's very sweet. The owner is lovely and chatty so you can learn a lot about the trains, if that's your cup of tea. Talking of which, it's attached to a lovely tea room which backs on to the river. It's usually attended well by all the local geese, ducks and swans. Next to the Pleasure boats too, so you can combine the three things in a day.

If you fancy driving 40 minutes you could do much worse than to visit this waterpark. There are 4 waterslides, 2 for 6+ and 2 for 8+, a wave pool, 2 heated pools (hot tub temperature.. They're beautiful) and outdoor pools and a splashzone area inside with slides and fountains for the younger kids. A bit pricey maybe but lots of fun! And I think a new spa section has opened if you want a more relaxing experience. We love to go later in the day when it gets dark and the lights come on in the outdoor pools. Fully licensed so you can also enjoy a glass of whatever whilst floating around. Club Tropicana springs to mind!

Amusement Park and Zoo. Something for all age ranges. It has the big fast rides not so for younger children. The area is also quite flat so easy for prams, wheelchairs etc. The zoo is great, you can easily spend a day in that bit with the animal shows and play area. It can get very busy during peak school holidays so be prepared to wait for rides. But well laid out and manageable.
