Vibrant Mexican community with tons of restaurants, bars, and bakeries. One of my favs is Xochimilco Restaurant. Even if you don't want to eat Mexican food, this area is a must see for the beautiful murals, awesome views of the Ambassador Bridge to Canada, and the Bagely Street Pedestrian Bridge, which gives you a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stand above 10 lanes of highway traffic.

For me, a must on Saturday morning. Get some coffee at the famous Germack Coffee Roasting Co and then "see and be seen." Stroll through each shed filled with farmers and gardeners selling their wares. Shed 5 houses the Kid Rock Kitchen Commons with a community kitchen offering free cooking lessons. While I've never gone any other day but Saturday, Eastern Mkt has a Sunday Street Fair with Detroit and MI-based artists selling handmade crafts, vintage clothing, specialty foods, and antiques.

Once a bustling rail depot and office to the MI Central Railroad (my dad's first job out of college), this station also catered to Amtrak until service ended in the late 1980s. It seems so odd that such a massive, majestic building (on the National Register of Historic Places) now sits idle. Located in Corktown and kinda hard to miss, be sure to drive by when you visit this area of the City.

Historic point of interest because this is the oldest surviving neighborhood in Detroit. While mostly residential, there are lots of great shops, bars and restaurants. Of special note: Fall 2016, Detroit is testing a program called Open Streets, temporarily closing off the portion of Michigan Avenue that runs through Corktown and converting it to a pedestrian-and bike-only zone.
