Rising from the rugged hills of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, the magnificent Garuda Wisnu Kencana statue stands watch over the island. The towering statue is Bali’s most iconic landmark and depicts the Hindu God Wisnu, atop his mount, the mythical eagle, Garuda. The Garuda is the national emblem of Indonesia, an enduring symbol of freedom from oppression. Soaring to a height of over 120 meters, this is one of the tallest monumental statues in the world, higher than both the Statue of Liberty and Christ the Redeemer.

You can watch traditional performances in Bali at GWK, almost everyday they perform dances here. Must visit for first timers or for those who love cultures.

Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) is a multipurpose cultural park that covers 2.5 sq km in the hills of Ungasan, about 5 km south of the main Jimbaran area. Its main showpiece is a gigantic statue depicting the benevolent Hindu god Vishnu riding on the back of the mythical garuda eagle. The 121-metre-tall monument stands on a pedestal that’s about 46 metres high, making it one of the tallest landmarks in Southeast Asia. Cultural performances, exhibitions, and world-class events regularly take place at Garuda Wisnu Kencana.

You can see the statue from the plane as you come in to land. When completed the statue will dominate the landscape. The completion is still a couple of years off. The limestone quarry is a bit of a maze to walk through and there are a number of statues located around the park. The show in the auditorium runs most of the day and is worth stopping to look at.
