With the entrance to the trailhead just a 10-minute walk from Manta Soul, this 3.75-mile roundtrip hike traverses lush vegetation, dropping down to Kealakekua Bay and the Captain Cook Monument which commemorates the British commander killed there in 1779. Reachable only by boat, kayak, or foot, the waters there at the monument are one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, and home to pods of spinner dolphins. The hike is rated difficult, since there is a mile of uphill hiking on the return, but depending on what you want, you can hike a few minutes down the trail and a few minutes back up for a gorgeous open-air workout, or make a day of it and go all the way down to jump in the refreshing tropical waters as your reward. A reasonable, active pace will take you about 45 minutes to go down and about an hour to come back up.

This is a 4 mile round trip hike, with a 1,256 foot elevation drop. Wear sneakers, bring plenty of water, and enjoy the best snorkeling on the island at the base of the monument.

Approx 2 mile trail down to Kealakekua Bay. Great snorkel spot. Then 2 miles UPHILL. You need to be in shape and bring at least 1-2 liters of water per person.

A short down and back up hike to the Captain Cook Monument. The monument was built in 1874 commemorating the fallen British explorer that was killed in 1779. The only way to reach the monument is by boat, kayak, or foot. It is said that the water near the monument is one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. The hike down is easy enough. The slope is not too steep but watch out for any rolling rocks. The trail is partly shaded.
