Hopsewee Plantation is location on the south Santee River and has a delightful restaurant and store. There is a fee to tour the original plantation home, but walking around the property is free of charge. I'd recommend having lunch at the restaurant - delicious local fare!
Example of plantations in the area, this is currently owner occupied. Great tour, and understanding of the golden era of rice growing. Slave cabins, tea room with great food, and presentation. Wander alone, or take the tour. Worth while!

“Huntington State Park is a nature lovers paradise! Walk along the quiet trails and observe the wildlife (you may be lucky enough to spot a bald eagle!), soak up the sun on the undeveloped beach, and explore the history behind Atalaya Castle. We have an annual pass you may borrow that will grant you complimentary access to the Park (the Atalaya Castle tour is at an additional cost). A local favorite - you will love this ‘hidden’ treasure!”
