Prainha, not far away from the point of São Lourenço, is a black sand beach of volcanic origin that offers the opportunity for an unusual day at the beach. The landscape surrounding this beach is a stark contrast to that found on most of the rest of the island. Here, the usual shades of green are replaced by an arid landscape of yellows, browns and oranges.

It is also one of the most popular. Is small. Access is a bit difficult because to get there you have to walk down the mountain. It is one of the most crowded in summer.

This is my favourite natural sand beach in Madeira. Perhaps, one of the most popular too. The original photographs don't do justice to what the place looks like - I don't know who took those. I posted new ones: I hope it helps you get a better idea of the beach.
