Portimão is a relatively big town in the Algarve and it attracts a lot of tourists. It used to be a small fishing town, but since the second half of the 20th century it now heavily focuses on tourism. The area around Praia da Rocha is quite lively and also has plenty of nightlife.
Located in the estuary of River Arade, Portimao is known for its excellent Praia da Rocha sandy beach with plenty of warm, calm waters. Portimao has a long fishing tradition that developed in the 19th and 20th centuries with the advent of the canning industry and tourism.
