This bar right on the corner of Castro and Market has been around forever. It's significant because—to my knowledge—it was the world's first gay bar with full see-through windows, telling everyone, “We’re gay and we’re not afraid to be seen." It's a lounge with comfy sofas and a long bench where you can actually talk. Go in the afternoon on a sunny day and try for a window seat so you can watch the world go by.

At the Twin Peaks bar in the Castro, one can get a good drink and mix with the locals gay scene and see what the other half is like in this very diverse city.
Twin Peaks was the first openly gay bar in San Francisco. They literally tore the cardboard off the windows so people could see in and out, at great risk. We often stop in to this distinguished bar for a martini before heading downtown on the train to catch a show.

“The local post office. If you need to just mail a letter, there is a mailbox if you go up the street to the end of Douglass, up the stairs to States street and make a right towards Castro. About half way down on the right side of the street, there is a mailbox.”
