A bit far but a stunning example of Buddhist Pure Land architecture, this World Heritage Site was transformed from an aristocratic villa reflecting the popular beliefs of the Pure land Buddhism.
From Kyoto station 30mins by train. This temple was converted from a Fujiwara villa into a Buddhist temple in 1052. The "Phoenix Hall" (Houou-do), more properly known as the Amida-do, was built in 1053 and is the only original building remaining.
The Byōdō-in Temple, established in AD 988, boasts many unique buildings, shrines, and artworks worthy of a visit.
