Point of Interest
“The climb up 900 plus steps to the top of this historic fortress is worth it if you love stunning views. The Venetians built it in 1686. What’s fascinating is it was so well designed all attempts to conquer it were unsuccessful. Until the Greeks came and managed to take it over in 1822 during the Greek Revolution, surprising the world at the time. Independence was won against the Ottoman Empire. Greece was a new free state. Nafplio was named capital.”

“In this building was take place the famous "Second National Assembly" of Astros and the Kolokotroniko table, which took place on July 19, 1821, in honor of Dimitrios Ypsilantis. The building was destroyed in 1826 by Ibrahim Pasha, but was later restored by relatives of Karytsiotis. In the following years, it became a school and in 1959 it became an archaeological museum. In 2008 it was closed due to earthquake damages. However, visitors can see the venue where the National Assembly took place, the courtyard with some finds from the Herod of Attica Mansion and the two-story museum and its walls outside, which helped as a branch of the school. ”
