Close to I-90, but nestled in the pines, this neighborhood has 1-2 acre properties so houses are not too close, but not too far away. Nearby, less than a mile down the road is an ATV trail or if enough snow a snowmobile trail. It seems almost endless but merges with trails near Sturgis, SD. Our property has plenty of parking for many vehicles and trailers. It is asphalt until you reach our road which is gravel along with our driveway. But only about 400 ft of gravel. You can walk the gravel road for a uphill/downhill workout. Your Co-host Dan also has some running routes nearby, just ask. Also, one of our favorite hikes is Little Elk Creek which is only 7 minute drive from the suite. It is listed along with various other hikes in the Trail Addict magazine. Which I have several placed in the suite for you to take and use! See our pictures for the link to the webpage.

This spectacular clifftop property is the perfect escape from reality. Located west of Rapid City approximately 10 miles, this home is next to a small community called Johnson siding. You will absolutely fall in love with the views this property has to offer and will want to bring friends and family back year after year. The views are incredible sitting on top of this cliff and you will enjoy the hot tub as well. The house has an older charm that you don't find every day.
This Cabin on the cliff is almost untouched from when built and has a cozy feel of home. It will leave you feeling at peace and relaxed. Great for anything from a family reunion to just getting away. Sit in the hot tub and soak your worries away.
This cabin is about 15 minutes west of Rapid City and is in a great location to view all the Black Hills has to offer. There are other properties around but not close enough to bother.

The Creek-side home is too beautiful not to share. This home comes with serene sounds and spectacular views. We offer many places to sit and relax. There is a walking path in the backyard that leads to the waters edge. A grill on the deck. There is a mini bar, with a deck over looking the water, with a sleeping loft. Located in the Black Hills close to Rapid City, Sturgis, Deadwood, Keystone & Hill City. Sturgis Rally goers have to rent on Monday for the week. Or message me about arrangements.
I love my home. It is my happy place. The million dollar view. The sound of the water in the creek, going by. Coffee in the mornings on the deck, a beer at night. Just looking out the windows, or a Beautiful drive through the hills. We offer two bedrooms upstairs. A couch with a pull out sofa. Washer and dryer, and a kitchen stocked with everything you need. Downstairs is an unfinished basement with a gym, and another bedroom with queen size bed. Also A Creek great for TROUT fishing ( must have License) .
Love it! The neighbors are great. Big horn sheep on the hill across the creek, pass through occasionally. We have also seen bald eagles and lots of other birds.

The Willow is one of three homes on Freebird Ranch's 20 acres. See NemoAirbnb.com to see all our Airbnb properties for your reunions, retreats, and receptions. The Willow at Nemo is a new vacation home styled in Mid-century decor. Great care was taken to ensure that our guests were provided a beautiful and comfortable home to live in while visiting the Black Hills. Nemo is centrally located in the hills and everything the Black Hills has to offer is close!
The Willow is a newly constructed vacation home. It is located right in front of the bluffs of Nemo and has an unobstructed view and property extends right to the bluff which has a beautiful trout stream running along its base. When you walk in the front door you enter the mud room that has chairs to sit down on while you take off your shoes, a coat rack and a shoe rack. Then you enter the great room with a dining area that seats 6-8 people, and two couches (one is a corner sectional). There is also a galley kitchen with all new appliances and it is fully stocked with furnishings, condiments and some food items. We provide a complimentary bottle of wine, as well. Through the great room into the wide hallway and to the right you will find the 3/4 bath and laundry room. Next right from the hallway is the second bedroom that has a queen bed and two XL bunks that are quite sturdy and are built into the wall. Next from the hallway you enter the master en suite. It has a king bed, dresser, TV and fireplace. Its full bath has a corner tub/shower combo.
Nemo is a quaint small town with a year round population of about 35 people. We have several historic old mining town features and are located next to public trails into the Black Hills National Forest. There is a one pump gas station at the Mercantile which also provides beverages and snacks. We also have a restaurant called the Brandin Iron that is open seasonally. There are trail ride rentals for horseback and ATV activities. From the Dakota Magazine article: Nemo originated as 1800s Homestake company town We are like a family here. Enchanted by the scenic setting, the history and people of a tiny Northern Hills community, a Colorado attorney is renovating the century-old buildings of a former Homestake company town. After buying the Nemo Guest Ranch and Ox Yoke Ranch last fall, Jim Hansen and his wife Nancy embarked on an ambitious restoration program, beginning with the structure that was originally a company store, a branch of the Hearst Mercantile Company. "We've committed to honoring the land and the history," said general manager Brian Einspahr, "and we're taking great care to restore the buildings without changing the historic elements." Einspahr and the Hansens have discovered there's a wealth of Black Hills history centered in the little logging town located 10 miles northwest of Rapid City, 15 miles southeast of Deadwood. Even before the Nemo Post Office was established in 1889, out-of-luck newcomers, finding all available placer claims taken up in Deadwood Gulch, fanned out to locate claims along Boxelder Creek that flows through the valley. Various theories have developed about the origination of the Nemo name. Some oldtimers say it was derived from Jules Verne's 1864 subterranean fantasy, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea; others claim it's an Indian word meaning "nowhere" and still a third faction maintains it's 'omen' spelled backwards. However the name was conceived, Nemo became one of the 67 post offices established in Lawrence County in the late 1800s and is one of six still in operation, along with Deadwood, Lead, Spearfish, St. Onge and Whitewood. The men with Custer's 1874 Black Hills Expedition were possibly the first white men to traverse the area's rugged terrain. Enroute back to Fort Abraham Lincoln after exploring the Southern Hills, Custer's expedition camped west of Nemo while scouts looked for a pass through the limestone canyon walls. Their exit route is now known as Custer Gap. Once the news of Custer's gold discovery on French Creek spread across the country, eager gold seekers rushed into the Indian treaty lands. From Deadwood Gulch they fanned out to settle little communities throughout the Northern Hills. Benchmark. Greenwood. Slabtown. Rotting logs and scattered stones mark foundations of log cabins the miners left behind when those settlements became just names on Forest Service maps. But the town that was born from a mining company's timber needs refused to die, although the population dropped from 258 in 1910 to 40 in 1988. Two years after Custer's 1874 expedition left the Black Hills the Manuel brothers took $5,000 worth of gold from their Homestake mining claim in Lead. In June 1877 California mining entrepreneur George Hearst bought paid $70,000 for the claim and incorporated it as the Homestake Mining Company. Homestake's expanding mining operation consumed a staggering amount of timber each year (five million board feet of lumber and 20,000 cords of wood) as fuel for steam-powered mills and railroad engines, mine supports and employee housing. Shortly after Shortly after President Grover Cleveland set aside a million acres of timber as the Black Hills Forest Reserve in 1897, the nation's first application to purchase timber was submitted by Homestake superintendent T. J. Grier. Homestake built a sawmill at Este, three miles southwest of Nemo, ran a branch line of a narrow gauge railroad through Nemo to Este and bought out the 143-acre Nemo placer claim, present site of the Nemo Guest Ranch, for company headquarters. The mining company constructed offices for a superintendent and clerks and houses for families of sawmill employees. Single men lived in the boarding house or 16-room hotel, paying a dollar of their $3.25-per-day paychecks for board and room. A store, butcher shop and one-room school served the day-to-day needs of the 200 residents. In 1913 Homestake moved milling operations to Nemo. The town grew into a thriving little community with the Hearst Mercantile store as a central gathering place. After finishing their shift, sawmill men stopped in to pick up snuff or tobacco, gloves or overalls, hoist a cool one and swap tales. Housewives didn't linger when they did last minute shopping for the evening meal; the store was primarily male territory. Some things haven't changed much in the past 110 years. Although the present store is about half its original size it is still the hub of the Nemo community. Today's shopper picks up a loaf of bread or carton of milk, instead of a 100-pound sack of flour, a slab off the huge cheese wheel, a block of salt or bag of feed. And men still stand around the pot-bellied stove, swapping stories over a can of beer. Bob Deen, whose father ran the store in the 1930s, compared Nemo to Garrison Keillor's fictional Lake Woebegon, but "it wasn't fiction," he said. "It was one place where Norman Rockwell could have spent a lifetime and never run out of material." Between 1900 and 1920 Nemo's population more than doubled, from 200 to 500 residents. Overcrowded school facilities were replaced with a modern new schoolhouse (containing such conveniences as indoor bathrooms) in 1926. From 1933 to 1942 young men enrolled in President Franklin Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps lived at the C.C.C. camp at Este. They built campgrounds, roads and Forest Service houses, and improved thousands of acres of timber in the Nemo area. Another Civilian Conservation Center (Job Corps) became part of the community in 1965. At the live-in facility four miles northwest of Nemo, disadvantaged young men and women study for their GED while participating in vocational training programs After Homestake moved its milling operation to Spearfish in 1940, Nemo was virtually a ghost town until a Martin cattle rancher brought new life to the dying town. Frank Troxell bought the town in 1946 and his dream of Black Hills dude ranch became a reality. Naming the resort for their 4 T brand, the Troxells set to work restoring the aging timber camp buildings. Homestake's office building became a western-themed restaurant; vacant homes and the old meat market were remodeled into lodges and cabins; the old Hotel Annex became home to Troxell family members. Hollywood discovered Nemo in the 1950s. Western film makers shot location scenes at the 4 T, utilizing as authentic props the antique stage coach and chuck wagon still on display at the site. Meantime, just a few miles down the road, Harley and Freddie Roth were staging championship rodeos at their Ox Yoke ranch with the help of South Dakota's own World Saddle Bronc Champion Casey Tibbs. Casey married Miss South Dakota of 1954, Cleo Ann Harrington, at a New Year's Eve ceremony. The wedding reception was held at the Ox Yoke in January of 1959. Roth also supplied mules, cowboys, horses and old army supply wagons for the movie makers. An article in the Tri-State Livestock News said Roth's spread had "movie stars living in the guest rooms, bronc riders in the bunkhouse, cattle buyers in the kitchen." Much of the excitement at the Ox Yoke Ranch died when Harley Roth was killed in a plane crash in 1961. A new generation of fun-seekers attended concerts and dances at the big red barn in the 1970s and 80s, but in 1991 the Ox Yoke's red barn,a landmark on Nemo Road for nearly 90 years, burned to the ground Designated an official Centennial Community, Nemo held a three-day celebration of its 100th birthday in 1989. Current and former residents contributed articles to a commemorative book detailing the town's history. Nemo, South Dakota: One Hundred Years was edited by Elton and Norma (Troxell) Adams. "The optimistic thinking of the Nemo people is a special quality that binds us together. We are like a family here," the book said. Enthusiastic residents support a Nemo Community Association, a little log church, the volunteer fire department and auxiliary (the Nemo Fire Belles), serve on the Job Corps Community Relations Council, organize clean-up days and an annual Pioneer Picnic, yet still find time to lend a helping hand to neighbors. It's a close-knit community filled with people who wouldn't think of living anywhere else. In the Nemo centennial book Lois Weston wrote: "When Custer and his men camped in this valley over 100 years ago, he called it 'Paradise Valley' ... and that's exactly the way I feel as I sit at my kitchen table with a cup of coffee, looking down this peaceful, tranquil valley.

Merci Aaron!

The Lodge is one of three homes on Freebird Ranch's 20 acres. See NemoAirbnb.com to see all our Airbnb properties for your reunions, retreats, and receptions. "Western Elegance" best describes this lodge-style over 6000sqft home that is in the center of Nemo. The Lodge and yard are yours exclusively. The Ranch's shared spaces are the swimming pool with rec-room. This rental is 3 suites... Eagle, Heron, and Bluebird. The Lodge sleeps 24, 3 kitchens, 3 dining, 1 bar, 3 1/2 baths, and 3 laundry.
Entering the Lodge is such a pleasant experience. We just love this property and we think you will too! I will start with describing The Eagle's 2600 square feet of interior space: First there is a beautiful chandelier that spreads a glow throughout the foyer and the floor to ceiling mossy rock gas fireplace. The golden light really brings out the warmth of the red oak wood flooring and the golden logs that frame the great room. In the living room hangs our 6 foot wide bronze eagle created for Bruce by his good friend and bronze sculptor, Nick Swearer. To your right is a full kitchen with cherry cabinets and marble counter tops. There is also a bar that sits eight in comfortable leather and walnut bar stools. The appliances are mostly Wolf brands. The refrigerator has filtered delicious mountain well water. There is a dishwasher and the range/oven even has a pot filler and a grill. This kitchen is set up for a chef and even has a butler's pantry attached. There are two sinks, as well! The kitchen is furnished with utensils, spices, condiments, pots and pans, dishes, silverware and kitchen linens. The dining area has a Brazilia walnut oblong table with eight chairs. There is a Brazilia hutch that holds vintage dishes and silverware for use during special occasions. Throughout the great room's numerous windows you have a view of the bluff. (We named our ranch Freebird for many reasons, one of them being that we have so many different species of birds that visit our property. There are Eagles, Herons and Mountain Blue Birds, to name a few. ) The magnificent fireplace is a double view unit and is central to the great room. The comfortable fire is seen when you enter the residence and when you walk around to the living room. While in the living room, sitting or standing, you have a beautiful view of the bluff and the fireplace. This room is decorated in softly hued fabrics and leathers and has a golden soft glow. There is a flat screen television in the living room with DVD player and lots of DVDs on hand. The Eagle's master bedroom may be accessed through the great room or through the mud room. This bedroom is quite large and has two comfortable hotel quality queen beds. In addition, there are two velvet club chairs and a walnut dresser. There is a flat screen television with DVD player in the bedroom. The master is also an en suite bedroom. The bath has a garden jet tub, a five head shower stall with built in settee, a separate toilet, double vanities and a walk in closet. There is an additional door that can be used as access to the bathroom by others, as well. The other bathroom in the house is off of the foyer and is a single vanity with a toilet. Bathrooms are furnished with towels, tissue, various over-the-counter medicines, some vitamins, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, body soap, makeup remover wipes, q-tips, cotton balls, paper towels and more. The guest bedroom is accessed through the hallway to the left of the foyer. This bedroom has two queen platform beds with hotel quality linens. The design in this room will be slightly rustic with a love seat and club chair to relax or read a book. There is a flat screened television with DVD in the bedroom. There is a patio door with entrance to the deck, as well. There is a mudroom with a full sized washer and dryer set, more counter and cabinet space and another sink. For your dogs, we have a large utility room on the lower (walkout) level that we have turned into the 'pet resort'. We have several large kennels, a wash sink, and plenty of room for dog beds, blankets, and their stuff. We only ask that if your dogs can't go with you, they be kenneled while you are out. We also supply lint rollers, upholstery cleaners, and spot removers, if you should need it. At the end of the mudroom's hallway there is a small room and we have a small table and a few chairs there for someone to work on art, or put a puzzle together. In the Eagle there are stairs that take you downstairs to The Heron: The Heron from the stairway entrance (which can be locked) opens up into 2600 square feet of interior space with patio doors out to the lower deck, which is concrete. The flooring is Adura Tempo Steel (a light gray vinyl tile). We chose this tile because it does not require glue for installation, therefore helping to keep our property free of VOCs. The foyer has a double view fireplace, just like upstairs, however, this one is brick. The kitchen is danish modern, as is the dining room. The living room is furnished with reupholstered vintage couches from the 50s and 60s. The colors are soft and refreshing. There is a television/DVD in the living room. Under the stairs there is space for a closet and we turned that into your own laundry room with full sized washer and dryer. All windows in the Heron face the mountain. From the living room you have the door to the master bedroom. This room will have two queen platform beds with hotel quality linens. There will be a sitting area and a flat screen television/DVD in the bedroom. Down the hallway is the full bathroom with tiled walls and floors. At the end of the hallway is the entrance to the guest bedroom. This bedroom will also have two queen platform beds with hotel quality linens. There is a lounge area here, as well. This room has a patio door to the lower deck. There is also a flat screen television/DVD in the bedroom. From the lower back deck, the top level back deck and from the front of the residence you can access the next villa: The Mountain Blue Bird. This villa is the most private of them all since it has no one living above or below. Upon entering from the front of the residence there is a foyer with a bench and coat hanging area. The first thing you will see though is a floor to ceiling gas fireplace and beautiful walnut furniture. And then the view of the mountain from the floor to ceiling windows. This view is spectacular! There is a flat screen television with DVD player in the living room. The kitchen cabinets will be pecan or walnut and the counter tops will be charcoal gray. The flooring is the same gray tile that is in the Heron. There is a patio door that takes you to the upper cedar deck and allows you access to the Eagle. There are numerous lounging areas on all of the decks, with large capacity occupancy in mind. There are spaces, as well that accommodate a smaller group. Down the hallway in the Mountain Blue Bird you will find two bedrooms, each with two platform queen beds with hotel quality linens. Bedrooms have radiant heat and flat screen televisions. Rooms have been soundproofed. There is also a full bathroom with a double sink vanity. For outdoor cooking we have three barbecues outside on the grass. We do not allow barbecues on our decks. We provide barbecue utensils, the propane, tin foil, paper plates and plastic cups. If you use more than we have, we ask that you provide those on your own.
Small old west town nestled in the middle of the Black Hills National Forest. Nemo is the perfect location when visiting the area. We are central to everything.

This home is just a couple minutes off the main highway (385) which bisects the Black Hills. It is centrally located so whether your going to the rally, skiing, going to Mt. Rushmore or touring through the needles you have a great starting point. It's also close to the Mickelson trail for a hike or bicycle excursion. It's also a great place to stay home and relax in the mountain air.
The home is located next to the national forest on 5+ acres of land. Forest service trails are right off the driveway. If you're an RVer this is a dream come true. Be sure you check out the national forest service regulations before you explore.
This is a mountain home so there aren't many close neighbors but the ones that are close are friendly. You can feel free to strike up a conversation with almost any South Dakotan.
