Folks love Multnomah Falls, with its iconic scenery and accessibility. But it feels a little like Disneyland on a busy day. Crowded and hard to find parking. We like this little gem. Not as much as a roadside attraction as Multnomah Falls, but still quite easily accessible and has a trail that leads behind the falls.

The Syncline east trailhead is a great hike about 1 hr 20 min to the east in the Columbia River Gorge on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Sort of unique for its dramatic and sweeping views. There is some hill climbing here, as with most Gorge hikes. Pro tips: We suggest you take I-84 to get there, and WA State Hwy 14 back to maximize the dramatic variety of this trip. Also on the way out are a number of waterfalls that you can visit, including Latourell which is mentioned in this guide. To avoid hoards of crowds (seasonal) we further suggest you avoid Multnomah falls. On the way out you can stop in Hood River, OR and check out the town, shops, and restaurants. On the way back stop in White Salmon, WA for some great and quite unique Mexican food at Pixan, and pay a visit to Everybodys Brewing as well. You can also stop at Backwoods Brewing (one of our faves) in Carson, WA. They have a fantastic outdoor area.

The Mark O. Hatfield east Trailhead (just east of City of Hood River) and on the Historic Columbia River Highway winds through the Mosier Twin Tunnels and back for an easy, family-friendly 10-mile round trip ride. Along the way, it is impossible to ignore the spectacular geologic formations that tell the story of the gorge's creation. It is car free for your biking or running pleasure. More info: https://stateparks.oregon.gov/index.cfm?do=park.profile&parkId=113 This trail is being further developed and eventually will be part of a larger trail system through the Gorge. Pro tip: There are several segments of the trail completed to the east of this segment featured here. There are currently three sections of the trail open exclusively for bike/pedestrian use, totaling just over 13 miles: The eastern most section (featured above) is bike and pedestrian-use-only and stretches between the cities Hood River and Mosier and is approximately 5 miles each direction. This section runs through a forest of fir and pine trees, as well as two restored tunnels. Between Hood River, OR and Cascade Locks, OR is a 2-mile section between Starvation Creek State Park (renowned for its waterfall) and Viento State Park, where camping is available. Starting in Cascade Locks, OR there is a 6.5-mile section which ends in the John B. Yeon State Scenic Corridor. Wildflowers and ferns line this section, and stunning views of the Bonneville Dam feature prominently.

Yes, its a bridge. But a nice one only open to pedestrians, busses and the Max rail. This is the signature run/bike/scooter ride along the Willamette River in Portland, also known as Bridge City. The trails run within blocks of downtown and the Oregon Convention Center. There are several bridges allowing for great loop and river crisscrossing options, including the Burnside, Morrison, and Steel Bridges. From Tilikum Crossing to the south and the Steel Bridge to the north its roughly a 4 mile loop. Nearby landmarks include the Tom McCall Waterfront park, Oregon Maritime Museum, the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, and the East Bank Esplanade (which at 1200 feet is the longest ‘floating walkway’ in the U.S). Pro tip: Adult watering holes easily accessible from the trail (and close to each other) are: Mt Hood Brewing (in a converted rail car across from OMSI): https://yelp.to/l17E6YKV8pb Hair of the Dog Brewery and Tasting Room: https://yelp.to/zMyG1MVV8pb Wayfinder Beer: https://yelp.to/h4HQatdW8pb
