Fancy living like a hobbit in Hobbiton on a hobbity hill? Or perhaps you’d like to feel like Gulliver in Lilliput for the time of a weekend? The Little House on Gumstool Hill is as cosy as it gets. Sitting on the popular Gumstool Hill in the heart of the Cotswolds, The Folly (the cottage) is only a stone’s throw away from the centre of Tetbury. There are lovely walks just outside the cottage along the small river, and all the services are extremely close.
***COVID-19: We give the place a thorough clean after every stay, as well as leaving a couple of empty days in between bookings. Our cleaner uses bleach, hot water, and anti-bac on all surfaces*** The cottage features lovely Cotswold stone and roof tiles. It is very small, but comfortable. A paddle space saving staircase leads to the upstairs bedroom. It comprises of a king size bed, a high pile rug (snug for your toes) and two bedside tables (nothing else will fit!). You can have your breakfast, second breakfast, elevenses, luncheon, afternoon tea, dinner and supper in the kitchenette. Or alternatively you can nip into the local bakery and iconic pubs only a tiny stroll away. The kitchenette has two portable electric hobs, a microwave oven, a kettle, a toaster, a small fridge and all the necessary kitchenware and cutlery. We supply tea, coffee, sugar, olive oil and salt and pepper.
Tetbury has won numerous awards, earning the accolade "Heart of England in Bloom" and "Best Small Town." It was founded as an ancient hill fort, and on the same site was later built a Saxon monastery in 681, most likely by Ine of Wessex. Today, Tetbury is known as a small hidden gem of an English town, praised for its charming cottages and ivy-clad buildings and cottages, abundance of flowers and greenery, history, wool, antique shops, and historic buildings. Being in the Cotswolds, a number of lovely and popular walks are available to you, as well as the myriad of cute and iconic villages.

For a relaxed bite to eat or celebratory drink or two, head to The Smoking Dog – an honest pub with great grub owned by Butcombe Brewery, just a 10-minute walk from the cottage on Malmesbury’s High Street, The King’s Arms – or the Rose and Crown; a stylish country inn and locals’ favourite, just outside of Malmesbury’s centre in the pretty village of Lea (5-minute drive). For daytime bites, the famed Hobbs House Bakery (5-minute walk) offers a fantastic daily selection of fresh sandwiches, sweet treats and coffee, whilst The Summer Café (5-minute walk) boasts a brilliant breakfast menu as well as quiches, salads and sandwiches for lunch; topped off brilliantly with a giant slice of freshly-baked cake. Connoisseurs of Italian cuisine won’t be disappointed by La Campagna or The Birdcage (both a 5-minute walk), a traditional Italian eatery famed for its pizzas, named in homage to Malmesbury’s winding streets. Or try The Old Bell Hotel, England’s oldest hotel, which offers a great Modern British menu. For those looking for a good Indian restaurant, Spice Merchant is just a 10 to 15-minute walk out of the town centre and also offers a takeaway service but does not deliver. Slightly further afield, those in search of a memorable feast need look no further than The Dining Room at Whatley Manor, just a 10-minute drive from the cottage, where Michelin-starred dining courtesy of celebrated chef Niall Keating comes to life in an exceptional setting. Slightly more affordable, but just as impressive, is The Rectory Hotel in nearby Crudwell (10-minute drive), serving up traditional dishes with a modern twist in the boutique hotel’s elegant dining room, whilst sister pub The Potting Shed over the road offers a more relaxed alternative for foodies with a real country-pub vibe.

J'y reviendrai.

A self-contained one bedroom cottage in the centre of historic Malmesbury. A Grade ll listed 16th Century house that has been completely renovated.
No 4 is a terraced property in the centre of the Malmesbury opposite the magnificent Town Hall. The accommodation comprises on the ground floor of a sitting room, kitchen with space to sit and eat and a bathroom with over bath shower. The winding staircase leads to a bedroom with super-king size bed, made up with Egyptian cotton bedlinen from The White Company. Please be aware that cottage has a couple of steps on the ground floor and that the staircase is steep and narrow so people with mobility issues may find them difficult.
Malmesbury has a lively high street with a good smattering of independent shops as well as a small coop, several chemists and a WHS. The abbey is well worth a visit as are the famous abbey gardens (only open from spring until autumn) Further afield there is Westonbirt arboretum for a walk and great cafe. Bath, Bristol and Cheltenham are all an easy drive away.

A beautifully appointed, two-bedroom, two-bathroom, dog-friendly*, Georgian townhouse, with an air of French elegance, tucked in the heart of one of the Cotswolds’ most famous market towns, renowned for its royal connections and antique shops. New Church Cottage has a private, enclosed patio and secure, off-street parking for one car.
(*Dogs: 1 well-behaved dog is welcome at the cottage at an additional cost of £30. Please let us know if you will be bringing a dog and we will then revise your booking confirmation.) You’d be forgiven for missing New Church Cottage as you wander the bustling streets of Tetbury; arguably the most stylish market town in the Cotswolds, thanks to its boutique shops, designer delis and distinctly royal connections. Nestled in a terrace of classic honey-coloured Georgian townhouses just a stone’s throw from the town’s centre, New Church Cottage is distinguished by its quintessential duck-egg blue front door and pretty bay trees framing its front sash window; an elegant touch, setting the theme for the property as soon as you step inside. Walking straight into the cosy living space of the cottage, you’ll get a sense of its rich heritage, dating back to the 18th Century. An antique-surround open fire acts as the centrepiece of the room, with tasteful historic artwork, Sanderson fabrics and antique furnishings giving the room a timeless, elegant feel. Through the living room sits a small but well-formed kitchen, hand-painted and stocked with all that you’ll need during your stay, with a handy dining space tucked at the rear for comfortable dining. Up the winding staircase, lined with eye-catching Lewis & Wood wallpaper, you’ll find two bedrooms for up to four guests, each individually-designed with a twist of antique French sophistication. Bedroom two boasts a beautiful antique French double bed, complete with billowing fabric draping, plus pretty, painted antique furniture and views out onto the street beneath. Up another winding staircase (cleverly concealed behind a frosted glass door) sits the master bedroom, with show-stopping features emanating a real feeling of historic luxury. In here, guests will find a vaulted ceiling with chunky painted beams, a sparkling crystal chandelier, a sink-in French “Empire” style king-size bed and plenty of antique touches. There’s even a small but incredibly handy en-suite shower room; a great addition to the cottage’s main bathroom located just off the staircase on the first floor. With the sights and sounds of Tetbury quite literally on your doorstep at New Church Cottage, you’ll have plenty on hand to keep you entertained with a host of fantastic cafés, restaurants, shops and pubs to discover. After a busy day exploring, the cottage’s perfectly petite courtyard garden offers a welcome respite from the hubbub of the town, where guests can unwind with a sundowner or fire up the BBQ for charcoal-cooked feast. Facilities  WiFi  Bed linen, towels and tea towels  Log burner/ open fire  Charcoal BBQ  Outdoor dining area  Garden furniture  2 bedrooms  2 bathrooms (1 en-suite)  Washer/ Dryer  Fridge  Electric hob and oven  Microwave  Integrated dishwasher  TV with Freeview  iPod Dock  DVD player  Highchair x1  Travel cot  Iron and ironing board  Dog-Friendly  Shops within walking distance  Pubs/Restaurants within walking distance Local Amenities Amenities are very much on the doorstep here at New Church Cottage. For something a little special, Highgrove Shop is also on the high street of the town, selling a selection of luxury organic foods and homeware inspired by Prince Charles’ nearby Highgrove Estate. A Tesco Superstore is also just a 10-minute stroll (or 2-minute car journey) from the cottage on London Road, with nearby Cirencester (20-minute drive) boasting a Waitrose and large Tesco Extra superstore. If you fancy taking the hassle out of your stay completely, we recommend planning ahead with a grocery delivery; Ocado, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons all deliver to New Church Cottage. Full Description Downstairs Entrance New Church Cottage is tucked in the middle of a classic Georgian terrace, just off the High Street in the historic market town of Tetbury. Entering through a classic duck-egg green front door, you’ll step straight into the cottage’s living space. Living Room A true slice of Georgian elegance with just the right balance of mod-cons, New Church Cottage’s living room manages to expertly blend classic, elegant interiors with plenty of cosy touches to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Decorated in an attractive, classic palette of Cotswold creams, in here you’ll find sisal flooring, Georgian-era artwork, antique trinkets and sink-in sofas; one of which can be converted into a sofa-bed for two should you need some extra sleeping space. The true centrepiece of the lounge is its spectacular open fire with antique surround, flanked by bookcases stocked to the brim, and the perfect way to warm up in the cooler months after a busy day in the great Cotswold outdoors. Timeless, elegant and charming in equal measure, the living space offers a real home away from home feel for guests in search of comfortable luxury. Kitchen Through the living room to the rear of the cottage sits its kitchen and dining area, a galley-style space with seating for up to four. In here, the refined feel of the rest of the property continues thanks to plenty of traditional touches, including hand-painted units, Iroko wood worktops and a deep Belfast-style sink. We love the thoughtful nods back to yester-year, with old-fashioned cookbooks, mismatched seating and clever uses of cupboard space (hidden behind hand-made fabric doors) giving the kitchen an authentic, homely vibe. Jam-packed with all of the equipment you should need to self-cater well during your stay, there’s a seating area for four, plus additional outdoor dining courtesy of a bistro-style set in the cottage’s courtyard garden. First Floor From the cottage’s living space, head up a winding staircase, lined with beautiful floral Lewis & Wood wallpaper, to discover the upper floors of this classic Georgian townhouse. Bedroom 2 Sitting on the cottage’s first floor is Bedroom 2, an homage to antique French elegance, sure to make any guest feel as though they’ve stumbled into a luxurious yet understated boudoir. Farrow & Ball-hued walls in classic grey tones give the room a feeling of relaxation, contrasted with the pinks and greys of the billowing fabric drapes which frame the large sash window’s views of the Tetbury street beneath. A painted antique French double bed sits centrally to the room, boasting a plush canopy with Manuel Canovas fabric drapes, with a wardrobe, dressing table and small dresser offering a good amount of storage. There’s even a handy television with Freeview hidden discreetly behind the bedroom’s doorway for those who like to watch a good film before getting some shut-eye. Family Bathroom Half-way up the staircase to the first floor sits the main bathroom of the cottage, complete with bath and overhead shower, bespoke marble vanity cabinet, pretty green wood panelling and attractive limestone tiles. Flooded with light thanks to a bright overhead skylight, guests will have plenty to keep them entertained during a long soak courtesy of a jam-packed bookcase; an expert use of space, sure to keep book worms happy. Second Floor Bedroom 1 (master, en-suite) Head through a frosted glass doorway on the first floor and you’ll discover New Church Cottage’s ‘hidden’ master bedroom; a spacious bedroom tucked in the eaves of the house, found atop a winding staircase. A real hidden gem, the space up here will certainly surprise you, with the owners having made the most of what would have been the attic’s impressive vaulted ceilings and beautiful exposed beams. Perfect for couples, a beautiful French “Empire” style king-size beds acts as the bedroom’s centrepiece, complete with an elegant chandelier hanging above, to give the room a luxurious feel. Guests will find a large dresser and television with Freeview in here, plus all of the refined décor touches of the rest of the home and a bright window overlooking the street beneath. Best of all, the bedroom boasts its own en-suite shower room with walk-in shower, toilet, limestone flooring and pretty LED lighting. Very handy for avoiding potentially treacherous night-time journeys down the winding stairs when nature calls! Outside A real bonus to the cottage is its compact outdoor courtyard, found through the kitchen to the rear of the property. South-east facing, it gets a good amount of sunlight, completely private thanks to the pretty Cotswold stone walls that frame it. Here, a bistro dining set for four offers plenty of opportunities for al fresco dining, made easier thanks to the charcoal BBQ at your disposal. Entirely enclosed, little ones and dogs are safe to roam here.

Markets are held in the town centre every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am – 3pm. Once one of the most prosperous wool towns in the country, Tetbury still remains a lively and popular hub of Cotswold commerce and appreciation. The central feature of the town is the Market House, built in 1655 when Tetbury was at the height of its wool trade, and designed for the sale of wool and yarn. To honour its past, every year on the last Bank Holiday Monday of May, Tetbury Woolsack Races are held, an age-old tradition that dates back to the 17th Century. The idea of wool sack racing was born from drovers who would run up a steep hill with a very heavy sack of wool in a bid to impress the local ladies! Men’s sacks weigh 60lb while women’s way 35lb, and they must carry their sack above their head as they run the 240-yard course up and down Gumstool Hill, past the old weaver’s cottages, as part of a relay. Although it’s free admission, with plenty of stalls, amusements and a fabulous street fayre, this event has raised a lot of money for charity in the past and is always hosted by a guest celebrity – watch this space! Tetbury is also home to Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall’s country home and primary residence, Highgrove Estate. Although not open to the public, garden tours can be booked in advance online as well as numerous other events that take place at the stunning royal residence throughout the year. Tetbury has a fantastic food scene, from gourmet dining at The Close Restaurant and pub cuisine at The Royal Oak and Snooty Fox, to delicatessen cafes galore such as Café 53 and The Blue Zucchini.

Malmesbury’s town centre is just a (very) short stroll over a traditional stone bridge from the cottage’s front door, as are numerous walks along public footpaths through the countryside that surrounds the town’s outer boundaries.

    Kieran2019-09-29T00:00:00Z

Beautiful listed cottage in the heart of the ancient hilltop town of Malmesbury, north Wiltshire on border of Gloucestershire. Tetbury ( famous home of Prince Charles and Badminton is a 10 minute drive. Set high on a hill, encircled by two rivers Malmesbury was originally an Iron Age Fort, and the towns skyline is still dominated by the beautiful and imposing Abbey, founded as a Benedictine monastery circa 676. Matchbox Cottage is central to the town centre, and opposite the Abbey.
Matchbox Cottage is in one of most convenient of locations opposite the beautiful Abbey, the bell towers and The Old Bell Hotel, said to be the oldest hotel in England. The cottage while small is full of old world charm, in a style befitting a newly renovated listed cottage.
Friendly market town with pubs and restaurants catering for all pockets and tastes, and with plenty of independent shops in its pretty high street. The town hall shows regular films, Abbey House Gardens where it’s said the ‘King of all England’ is buried. A lovely detached open house set in quiet gardens overlooking the countryside. With its own entrance and parking. Relax in the spacious dining room with seating for 6 and take in the views of the beautiful countryside. The bedrooms can either be set up as a king size bed and twin beds, or a king and super-king bed. A quick easy walk to the village shop, post office and Rattlebone Pub make this an ideal location to stay. From our garden gate you have direct access to the Macmillan Way footpath.
Set within quiet gardens backing onto open fields, this is a newly renovated detached house. It has its own parking space and own entrance. A short, easy walk and you are in the heart of the village of Sherston. The two bedrooms are upstairs, they are in the eves so head height is limited at the edge of the rooms, but there is plenty of head height in the main of the room. The bathroom and toilet are downstairs. If you require the second room to be set up as a super-king bed instead of a twin room, please let me know at least 2 days before. To do our bit to save energy, we don’t iron our bed linen and we line dry, whenever possible. Facilites include a dishwasher, fridge with ice compartment, washer dryer, crockery, cutlery, sharp knives for cooking, saucepans and frying pan, tea towels, bathroom mirror with shaver point, tv, wardrobe with hangers, towels and bedding, bedside lamp, high chair, travel cot (guests provide your own bedding for the cot). A car parking space is allocated to you. The garden is not separately fenced to my family garden, but we have allocated you the garden to the front of the dining room, which is in line with the holiday house.
Sherston is a fantastic village with lots of amenities. The famous Rattlebone pub serves fantastic food and drinks throughout the day. The village shop is a Mid Counties Coop, open 7 days a week providing all your essentials, fresh bread and cakes and much more as well as a post office. The Court Yard Cafe provides fresh coffee and cakes. The Carpenters Arms pub provides a café in the morning and pub in the evening. We are spoilt for amenities. The Westonbirt Arboretum is just 5 minutes away providing a great day out, Badminton Horse Trials is just 6 miles away, and the historic towns of Tetbury and Malmesbury are only 10 minutes in the car.
