Bike through Charleston's history with a preservationist

Pedal through Charleston’s storied past on this engaging 90-minute bike tour of historic Uptown. From the Colonial period through the Civil Rights Era, you’ll uncover the city’s rich heritage, fascinating local landmarks, and hidden gems—all while enjoying a scenic ride through its charming streets. • Uncover Charleston’s diverse history at Civil War-era sites like Hampton Park (once a plantation, racetrack, and Civil War encampment); the William Enston Homes with its stunning Romanesque Revival architecture; and cultural icons such as The Citadel, Charleston’s prestigious military college. • Hidden stories abound along our route, including through the National Register Historic District of Hampton Park Terrace where we will see the homes of nationally politicians, business leaders, and the man responsible for bringing down Al Capone. • We'll see imporant landmarks including houses and schools that were important in Charleston's 20th century Civil Rights Era struggles. Note: The tours are set up for 11:30 to 1:00 on Satursdays and Sundays because I teach during the academic year. But if other times or dates work better, let me know! Note: You'll need a bike for the tour. If you don't have one, a locally-owned bike shop (BildaBike) is just two blocks off the tour route. You can rent a bike for the whole day there for (currently) $30 and keep it to ride the rest of the day.

You’ll gain a deeper understanding of Rodin’s genius and why he’s considered the founder of modern sculpture. •The tour also explores the elegant design of the French garden, including a beautiful reflecting pool. Join me, an architect and preservationist, on a walking tour through tree-lined streets and historic landmarks as we uncover the stories behind one of the city’s most significant neighborhoods. • Meet at a historic Hyde Park Fire Station, where I’ll introduce Hyde Park’s origins as a street-car suburb and its more recent history of progressive leadership. • Stroll past restored Victorian homes and early-20th-century bungalows, tree-lined streets and alleys as I share stories of the architects, residents, and preservationists who shaped the neighborhood. • Visit Shipe Park and the Elisabet Ney Museum, two landmarks saved by community-led efforts, and learn how Hyde Park evolved from an exclusive Victorian-era district to a diverse neighborhood navigating modern redevelopment. • Along the way, I’ll discuss Austin’s approach to historic preservation and the balance between growth and maintaining architectural heritage. You’ll leave with a deeper understanding of Hyde Park’s past, and the many forces working to define its future.

Skate & Destroy: Thrasher Magazine's Downtown Pilgrimage

San Francisco’s streets are the most radical site for skateboarding's history in the world. On Thrasher Magazine’s Skate and Destroy Tour, walk—or roll—through the architecture, history, and underground scene that made the city a global skateboarding mecca. • Begin at St. Mary’s Square to learn how Modernist architecture in Northern California created the most radical terrain for skateboarders, before exploring iconic spots like Black Rock, China Banks, Portsmouth Square and Embarcadero to hear how sculptures, plazas, and surfaces shaped the sport. • Follow the lines of legends like Tommy Guerrero, Keith Hufnagel, and Mike Carroll, and see firsthand how Financial District plazas became proving grounds for technical innovation in skateboarding. • Conclude at the Ferry Building, steps from the Embarcadero, where modern technical street skating was born. I’ll share stories of how skaters transformed the area into one of the most important spots in skateboarding history.

Before Stonewall: A queer walking tour of Greenwich Village

Join a journalist on a walking tour of Greenwich Village, visiting the homes and haunts of LGBTQ+ writers who lived, worked or were incarcerated in the decades before the Stonewall riots. • We'll meet up near the site of Eve's Hangout, considered by some to be the first lesbian bar in New York City and whose proprietor holds a special place in queer literary history. As we walk to other historic sites we'll hear more about the nightlife scene of the early 20th century, and how luminaries like Audre Lorde and Lorraine Hansberry navigated queer life. • We'll visit the former site of the Women’s House of Detention, which housed many incarcerated queer people, and I'll share its relevance to early LGBTQ+ life in the Village. • After stops to honor and consider other queer women whose literary works left lasting impressions on both our culture and the literary canon, we'll conclude at Henrietta Hudson, a lesbian bar open since 1991, to talk about present-day LGBTQ+ life in New York and beyond. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the lives of LGBTQ+ people whose work, activism and bravery led to the modern queer rights movement, and I'll send you on your way with a list of further readings if you'd like to continue learning about this fascinating era! The tour has a bathroom break at the halfway mark, and we'll walk about 1.5 miles in total.

Walk, shop, eat, and drink with me, a journalist and food writer, in the eclectic southeast Portland neighborhood of Kerns, one of the city’s liveliest areas. I’ll show you its history and highlights at my favorite coffee shops, art galleries, landmarks, and vintage shops. • Meet at Heart for introductions and the neighborhood’s best coffee and then stroll to Nationale, an art gallery and bookshop that showcases emerging artists. • I’ll share the stories behind Burnside Street’s landmarks, including the Art Deco Laurelhurst Theater, and answer any Portland-related questions you may have as we wander up 28th Avenue. • Pop into Olo to chat with the designers of locally made perfumes, browse the vintage collection at Goodbye Horses, and discuss what you’ve seen over margaritas and snacks at Güero. Step into the heart of Los Angeles’ artistic landscape with me, a longtime arts & culture journalist, editor and producer, on a two-hour walk through LACMA’s outdoor masterpieces weaving together art, architecture, and cultural history. • Meet at LACMA's masterpiece Michael Heizer’s Levitated Mass, a giant boulder placed above a viewing pathway. I’ll share engaging stories behind these world-renowned artists and their works. • I’ll lead you to some of LACMA’s most awe-inspiring (and photographable!) installations, including Robert Irwin’s Primal Palm Garden, Bruce Goff’s swooping Pavilion for Japanese Art, and Ai Weiwei’s large-scale bronze animal Zodiac Sculptures. • End at Chris Burden’s Urban Light, a large-scale assemblage of restored street lamps from the 1920s and 1930s, with a dynamic discussion of what you’ve seen, which we can continue at local food truck favorites just across the street. You’ll leave with deep insights into the city’s ever-changing cultural landscape, and some spectacular photos of modern art from Los Angeles.

Join Captain Joe for a relaxing private boat cruise over to our oyster farm where you will master the art of oyster shucking our fresh Maine oysters, and learn about our Shellfish Reef Restoration project. Feel free to bring along snacks and your favorite beverages. I’ll make sure we have plenty of oysters and a special drink to enjoy! This trip lasts 1.5-2 hours and is available for up to 6 people . Kids of all ages are welcome to come but I find that children ages 13+ get the most enjoyment out of this type of trip. I have a similar aquaculture trip that is designed for kids aged 2-12 if you are looking for a more family-friendly activity. During our tour you will see a wide array of local wildlife including the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin. Bring whatever you’d like to eat or drink. (BYOB)! Perroquets au Paradise Sanctuary

Every parrot has a story. You’ll learn all about our rainbow-colored rescues in Kona’s only parrot sanctuary. We’ll start with our mission: to give every displaced parrot a nutritious diet, large space to fly, and a safe place to interact with other parrots (and people). Next, we'll take a walk around the sanctuary, where you can get to know the range of personalities of cockatoos, lovebirds, macaws, and more species. Throughout the tour, you will have many photo opportunities, especially with our well-trained parrots. Other things to note: Wear casual clothes, closed-toe shoes, sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, and bring a camera. Parrots in Paradise Sanctuary is also home to two rescue dogs, two Holstein cows and two sulcata tortoise. While we like to keep our group sizes small to enhance a personal experience, we are open to hosting larger family/friend groups with more than six individuals.

You will meet me at Squid our motorized catamaran. We will depart from the dock located at the Historic Seaport. We will head out on the water to an area which provides a year round home for about 200 wild Bottlenose Dolphins. This is my moment to share the wonders of these marine mammals with you, while always operating my vessel in a manner that is safe and respectful of the dolphins and their need for space. With the right know-how I can usually find dolphins in under an hour and in calm waters. After observing the dolphins many different behaviors from the boat we will head to one of my favorite spots to snorkel with sponges, coral heads or a patch reef. I will take you to the best place with the best visibility that day. My mate will be your guide, leading you around a calm snorkeling spot and point out animals that make our ecosystem unique and answer any questions that you have. Check in at the HONEST ECO boat Squid. If you are driving down the keys the day of the trip just remember it is a road that is only one way in and one way out. One accident on that road can hold you up for the day. We do not issue refunds if you miss the boat. It is best to ride a bike in Key West or take a cab. Lastly, the marina parking lot is around $20 to $30 for the day. It can fill up in the afternoons please plan accordingly! Thank you!

Often the most amazing sunsets from this spot on the water are where there are distant clouds on the horizon and the amazing colors of orange and yellow and sometimes purple paint the most unique skies you could imagine.
