When our kids were little, this was a favorite place to walk. Take a picture of the map, as there are lots of little trails, and it can be confusing. However, this also makes it great. If things are going well, take another little loop. If things are falling apart, you can bail pretty quickly.

If you are looking for an activity the whole family can enjoy or just want to get away from the high traffic tourist destinations than look no further than Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Birdsacre. Here you’ll find three attractions in one, hours of beautiful winding nature trails, an intimate up close and personal Bird Sanctuary, and a Historic Homestead museum. Hike Birdsacres 3 miles of interconnected nature trails. Discover simple serenity as you explore the forest streams and fern-lined slopes of the 200 acre Sanctuary. Birdsacre Preserve’s vital wildlife habitat, is home numerous species of native Maine flora and fauna, and serves as a stop over for migrating birds in spring and fall. Trails are open year round from dawn to dusk. Entrance is free. Spend some time viewing the non releaseable hawks, owls, and vultures who have found a second home on the property. Visit the Victorian Homestead of Ellsworth’s own Cordelia J. Stanwood (1865-1958). Built by her sea faring father, the homestead is now a museum that offers a view to an earlier time as well as houses Cordelia’s glass plate photography. The Homestead is open for tours Tuesday through Saturday, 11am- 3pm.
