The Mahébourg regatta started in the south of the island, thanks to the initiative of some sailing enthusiasts. At that time the races were so popular that special trains were organised to allow the public to attend the event. Mahebourg the town have got shops, restaurants, banks and its everyday veg market, also its famous Monday market.
Head to the Mahebourg Waterfront for excellent fruit pickles (confits) and fresh coconuts from the street stall. Also try the "merveille", sort of a Mauritan version of the papadum. Eat with tamarind sauce or chilli/ coriander sauce.
Visit the Mahebourg market on Mondays, and walk around the old town of Mauritius.
