The route of the Glen Burney Trail is reputed to have been a Native American pathway. The trail was formalized from Blowing Rock into this cascade-filled chasm in the late 1800s when the tourist trade first came to town. A beautiful place right in town to see a waterfall! This is a moderately strenuous hike, though ~ the beginning is flat but mostly downhill, but then you have to hike back up. This is not a place you want to go if people in your group like to stray. There are signs warning hikers to stay on the path or in designated areas, all in the name of safety. There's a picnic table about a mile in that will make this a 2.4-mile roundtrip hike.
