Guvercinlik Vadisi (Pigeon Valley) earned its name from the countless man made dovecotes (Pigeon Houses) that have been carved into the soft volcanic tuff. Since ancient times Pigeons have been used in the Cappadocia region for food and fertiliser for the infertile soil. While pigeons no longer play such an important role in the area, their rocky homes have still been maintained by locals and can be found atop rock pillars and inside excavated cave houses and churches throughout the region, however, they are particularly numerous in this valley. A great way to see Pigeon Valley is from above via a hot air balloon tour. Tours leave every morning just before sunrise so you will already be floating above the stunning landscape as the sun comes up. Pigeon Valley is one of the best spots for walking in the marvellous Cappadocia region, Central Anatolia. The valley is located between Goreme and Uchisar, where you can visit Uchisar Castle for a magnificent view, an easy hiking trail connects the two via the valley passing through rock-hewn Christian churches and abandoned cave homes.

Güvercinlik (Dovecote) Valley starts with Uçhisar in the west, and ends Göreme. The route, approximately 4 kilometres long, provides an insight into the natural geology and flora of the region for visitors. There are opportunities to cross to the other valleys and you can reach both entrances of the valley by car. Humans used pigeon droppings as fertiliser in their vineyards and orchards and to obtain a steady supply they dug dovecotes into the rocks around the earliest settlements in Uchisar. The valley, with its rock hewn dwellings and fairy chimneys in various colourful combinations, leads which is a suitable you spot to Göreme, for a break as it has several cafés and restaurants. If you prefer, you can take a climb to Aydınkırağ to observe the various rock formations as well as to enjoy the panoramic view of Mount Erciyes. The route follows the Love Valley (Görkündere), El Nazar Church and Kılıçlar Valley, and ends at the Göreme Open Air Museum. Start points can be either Uchisar or Göreme and the route can be followed in both directions.

Kapadokya’nın birçok yerinde rastlanan ve "Güvercinlik" denilen yapılar manastır yaşamının başladığı devirlerden de önce aynı amaç için yapılmış ve kullanılmış. Derin vadilerin diplerinde ve dik yamaçlardaki güvercinliklerin sayısı binleri bulur. Daha önce de belirtildiği gibi, bölgenin kendine özgü toprak dokusu tarım için özel bir gübre türünü zorunlu kılmış ve bölge halkı için güvercinlerden bu şekilde yararlanılabileceğini keşfetmek fazla zaman almamış. Güvercinlikler bu kuşun etinden ziyade gübresinden yararlanmak için yapılmış. Yöre çiftçileri tarafından nesilden nesile bağ ve bahçelerde verimi artırmak için güvercin gübresi kullanılmış, bu nedenle çok sayıda güvercinlik inşa edilmiş.Kapadokya Bölgesi güvercinlikleri en yoğun biçimde Uçhisar civarındaki vadilerde, Göreme- Kılıçlar ve Güllüdere Vadilerinde, Ürgüp Üzengi Vadisi’nde, Ortahisar -Balkan Deresi ve Kızılçukur Vadisi’nde, Nevşehir yakınlarındaki Çat Vadisi’nde ve Kayseri sınırları içindeki Soğanlı Vadisi’nde bulunuyor.
