Kells Priory is one of the largest and most impressive medieval monuments in Ireland. The Augustine priory is situated alongside King's River beside the village of Kells, about 15 km south of the medieval city of Kilkenny
The 12th century Kells Priory is now possibly the largest monastic sites in Ireland. It is not well known but is definitely worth a visit.
This is a short distance from the little town of kells. Kells Augustinian Priory is one of the best preserved in Ireland, it is a National Monument and a must see. In Kells you will also find a Celtic cross that dates from the 9th century at the burial site of Niall Caille, High King of Ireland. Wander around the ruin which has a church, a chapel, prior’s residence or sacristy and several domestic buildings. There are guided tours available from Mid-June to Mid-September.
