The rock formations standing in Trollholmsund today is linked to an ancient Sami legend. According to legend a troll came walking over the plateau. Some trolls supposedly came northwards from Lakselv. They carried with themselves a chest containing gold and silver. They came down to the sea and could not go further. It was just before sunrise, and they were looking for holes big enough that they could hide in. They could not find any, and turned to stone when the sun rose. Here you can find lapland rosebay (Rhododendron lapponicum), which needs lime, unlike other rhododendrons, which need acidic soil. Trollholmen is a small island located just east of the mainland and Trollholmsund.
