The first train traveled through this 6.2 mile-long tunnel in 1928, and is still the current route of the famed California Zephyr. In fact, you'll drive over the same set of tracks twice (and under once) if you come to the Coffeetime Cabin via Coal Creek Canyon/Hwy 72. The East Portal is about 30 minutes' drive from the Coffeetime Cabin.

Any vehicle can drive to the end of this road. It allows access to forest lakes in the Indian Peaks wilderness area, a beautiful alpine, subalpine, and montane environment with small lakes and lots of wildlife around.
