If you're looking to try out a new activity with your family/friends, we recommend booking a surfing lesson at Maui Wave Riders in Kihei. The waves at Cove beach across the street are small and the water shallow - ideal for beginners or non-swimmers. They also rent out paddle boards and surf boards.
