A Sphinx he story takes us back to 1901. The then famous Giovanni Smirić from Zadar started to build a mansion in a beautiful park in the Bay of Maestral. Until just a few summers, he enjoyed his family, but soon his wife dies. He commemorated the sphinx in her memory.

Located in the Uvala Maestral or Bay of Maestral, (it is actually Dražanica vela bay) it can be seen right from the road. It is not an easy walk from the Zadar peninsula but if you cross to the mainland by a barkarijoli row boat service, you will have a lovely walk along one of the most prestigious parts of Zadar. The villas of the old Italian owners are still amazingly beautiful and many of them with wonderful gardens and even fish ponds. There are not too many sphinxes in Dalmatia left. Most famous being those brought by the Romans and now in Diocletian’s Palace. But this is the biggest of all sphinxes in Croatia. It is also a very special sphinx since it was built in memory of a bellowed woman: it is said that it grants love wishes.

If you take "barkajol" across the water, you'll end up on a shore with a small beach and some good bars. Walking towards the west, you'll end up at Sfinga cafe, and then continue onwards to find a small (and newly refurbished) Sfinga (sphinx) park. It's a pretty unique sight for this area, and maybe a nice little half-day adventure to that city area.

The stories about the Zadar Sphinx, and the treasure buried under it, were the inspiration for numerous fantasies by generations of Zadar citizens. The replica of the Egyptian Sphinx in Zadar had the relief of an eagle on its chest, and instead of paws it had fingers, with which it was once holding a big sword to protect a little fishpond in the shape of a shell. In 1918, devastated by the pain of the premature loss of his wife, Attilia, the famous Zadar citizen Giovanni Smirich had a Sphinx built of concrete in her honour. It is located in the part of the city called Brodarica, within the grounds of Villa Attilia and the park in the Maestral bay, and according to a legend, since it was built in memory of a beloved woman, it is said that it grants love wishes.
