The archaeological ruins of Briteiros are a remarkable proof of the existence of an important early settlement of pre-Roman origin, belonging to the general type of so-called "castros" of northwest Portugal. Numerous buildings of various kinds, arranged somewhat freely, but obeying, however, even that incipient urban scheme, offer impressive slopes and objective for the knowledge of those people so remote, alcandoradas at the top of the mountains and yet protected several belts of walls, whose extensive cloths still can be admired.
