It’s easy to get to and the views are unbeatable. It’s where Alfred Wainwright became inspired prior to writing his guides.

Orrest Head is a hill in the English Lake District on the eastern shores of Windermere. It is the subject of a chapter in Wainwright's The Outlying Fells of Lakeland, and the first fell he climbed.

For a family-friendly stroll with excellent views of Windermere and the southern lakes, walk to Orrest Head. This simple route requires no prior hiking experience, as you'll follow just one well-marked trail. The entire journey takes 45-60 minutes on foot from nearby Windermere. Be wary of the paths near the top of the trail, which may be steep for those with physical limitations. If you prefer to return by a different route, take the footpaths back to the village from the top. Make Orrest Head a centerpiece of your Windermere vacation itinerary,
